Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has declared support for Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi in the coming 2022 polls.

Speaking at Mumias East on Saturday, Echesa hinted at a possibility of supporting Mudavadi's candidature but asked him to 'spread wings' outside Western Kenya region first.

“People are taking advantage of Mr Mudavadi's politeness to undermine the Luhya community. But they need to understand that there are other leaders in Luhya land who can give direction. We are asking our elder brother, [Mr] Mudavadi to stamp his authority and command the community knowing that we are behind him,” said Echesa as quoted by the Nation.

“I am ready to do anything to ensure a Luhya ascends to power. But this can only be possible if [Mr] Mudavadi moves out of the comfort zone to get the support of other communities,” he added.

The former CS is a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto and his statement could worry the DP. Ever since his dismissal from the cabinet in February this year, Echesa has often championed for Ruto's presidency.

And in a quick rejoinder, Mudavadi asked Echesa to formally join ANC, arguing that the party belongs to all Kenyans. He said that he's ready to work together with the former ODM Youth Leader.

"ANC Party is for all Kenyans! Come, let's work together. Welcome on board brother Rashid Echesa," the ANC party leader said in a tweet.
